Talk with a Philosopher is run by the operator (the company name and address will be published here before launch). This policy explains how we handle personal data under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The contact address for privacy questions will be published on this page before launch.
Without an account the app runs in guest mode: the name you enter, the topics you pick, the date you accepted the disclaimer and your conversations are stored in your browser's local storage on your device only. With an account we store your profile, your consents, your conversations and basic usage counts on our servers in Frankfurt, Germany, inside the European Union. The text of your conversations is encrypted at rest with a key that only our servers hold. Safety checks are recorded as a category and a time, never as text.
Why we process your data: to provide the service you asked for (contract), and, for the content of your conversations, which may touch on your health or state of mind, on the basis of the explicit consent you give during onboarding. You can withdraw that consent at any time by deleting your account.
Who processes data on our behalf: Supabase (database and sign-in, hosted in Frankfurt), Vercel (hosting), and Anthropic (the AI provider). To generate a reply, the recent conversation and your first name are sent to Anthropic in the United States under a data processing agreement with the standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission. Anthropic processes the text to produce the reply and does not use it to train its models.
We do not sell your data, we do not share it with advertisers, and we do not build a profile of you from what you write. The app contains no advertising and no third-party trackers. It uses only strictly necessary cookies: the one that keeps you signed in. For that reason there is no cookie banner.
How long we keep data: until you delete it. Open the You tab and choose Delete my data. Without an account that clears this device; with an account it deletes your account and everything stored under it. Backups are removed within 30 days.
Your rights under the GDPR: access to your data, correction, erasure, portability (an export of your conversations will be available from the You tab), restriction and objection, and the right to complain to a supervisory authority. In Hungary that is the National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH); you may also complain to the authority of the country where you live.
The app is for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If a conversation suggests the person writing may be younger, the philosopher will gently suggest talking with a trusted adult.
Dictation. If you use the microphone button, your browser's own speech recognition turns your voice into text: Apple's service in Safari and on the iPhone, Google's in Chrome and on Android. The audio may be sent to that company and is handled under its privacy terms, not ours. We do not record audio and we never receive it; only the recognised text enters the conversation, like a typed message. Your keyboard's own dictation key works the same way and is not part of the app.
Voice. If you turn voice on, the text of each reply is sent to ElevenLabs, which turns it into speech in an original voice made for this app; ElevenLabs receives the reply text and nothing about you. In the home-screen app, where the browser's own dictation is not available, your spoken message is sent to Deepgram to be turned into text; it is handled under Deepgram's privacy terms and we do not store it. Voice is part of Premium and has a monthly allowance.
